DENORMS (Designs for Noise Reducing Materials and Structures) Action, CA 15125, is funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST). DENORMS Action activities were launched on the 9th March 2016 for 4 years.

Training School 3

« Experimental techniques for acoustic porous materials and metamaterials »

DENORMS Action Training School 3 « Experimental techniques for acoustic porous materials and metamaterials » was held from 4th to 6th December 2017 in Le Mans (FR).

This Training School, co-organised by LAUM, UMR CNRS 6613, and DENORMS, aimed at providing a common experimental background to researchers, engineers and technicians working on acoustic metamaterials, metasurfaces and sonic crystals as well as conventional acoustic materials. The Training School covered the following topics:
– Impedance tube measurements
– Ultrasonic characterisation of porous materials
– Mechanical characterisation of porous materials
– Characterisation of sonic crystal
– Characterisation of acoustic metamaterials
– Introduction to psychoacoustics & psychoacoustic tests
– Norms and Standard
– Photoacoustic characterisation at microstructure level

Workshop 2

« Sandpit: New approaches to design of noise reducing materials and structures »

DENORMS Action’s Brainstorming Workshop “Sandpit: New approaches to design of noise reducing materials and structures”, took place on 14th and 15th September 2017 in Novi Sad (Serbia), organised by University of Novi Sad.

The goal of this sandpit was to develop new ideas and collaboration plans on the following topics:

  • Sound absorption by structured materials
  • Diffusers and metasurfaces
  • Sound insulation by structured materials
  • Landscape sound insulation by sonic crystals
  • Active structures and smart materials
  • Elastic energy mitigation
  • Vibroacoustic energy mitigation in thin walled structures
  • Characterisation of non-conventional porous materials and acoustic metamaterials

This sandpit was a timely and unique opportunity to achieve scientific breakthroughs in the identified topics and to enhance collaboration between the DENORMS members. To achieve this, brainstorming groups composed of 4-5 people from the 3 Action Working Groups worked together for 1 ½ days in a positive collaborative environment. Each brainstorming group nominated an Animator, in charge of leading the discussion and of reporting its outcomes. The expected outcomes for each group were: new concepts and approaches, detailed work plan including a tentative schedule of joint grants applications, publications and STSM). They were reported and discussed during the feedback session in the afternoon of 15th Sept. 2017 (½ day). For more information, see the Flyer.

Metamaterials 2017 – Side event

DENORMS – GDR Meta thematic day « Industrial applications of acoustic metamaterials »

DENORMS Action and the GdR META organised in Marseille on 1st September 2017 a thematic day dedicated to Industrial applications of acoustic metamaterials. This event aimed at gathering industrial and academic partners to discuss and exchange views. It was structured around presentations given by leading industrial partners in various fields of applications. The talks introduced current issues, new trends or metamaterial-based solutions already implemented in a practical context. Coffee breaks, poster sessions and panel discussions took place throughout the day in order to foster informal exchanges among the participants. This thematic day was organised as a side event of the Metamaterials 2017 Congress, allowing the participants to combine an industrial and practical perspective on acoustic metamaterials with an overview of the state-of-the art of the domain.

Participation was open to all, students, researchers, engineers or technical staff from academia or industry.

IcETRAN 2017

Special session « Noise control using acoustic metamaterials, metasurfaces and sonic crystals as well as porous materials » 

The 4th International Conference on Electrical, Electronic and Computing Engineering – IcETRAN 2017 co-located with the 61st National Meeting ETRAN was held on 5th to 8th June 2017 in Kladovo, Serbia.

A session on « Acoustics and Audio Signals » and a special session/round table devoted to noise control using acoustic metamaterials, metasurfaces and sonic crystals as well as porous materials has been organised.
During this session, information about COST Action DENORMS (CA15125) was disseminated and potentials for future joint actions and cooperation discussed. This session was a unique opportunity to bring together DENORMS parcipants from Serbia and neighbouring countries, but also from all around Europe. The invited talk entitled « From metaporous materials to subwavelength absorbers: some recipe to design perfect sound absorbers » was given by Mr. Jean-Philippe Groby, DENORMS Action Chair.
The conference was organised with the support of IEEE.

Workshop 1

« Modelling of high performance acoustic structures Porous media, metamaterials and sonic crystals »

DENORMS Action’s first Workshop on “Modelling of high performance acoustic structures Porous media, metamaterials and sonic crystals” took place on 24th and 25th January 2017 in Rome, organised by Roma Tre University gathering more than 80 participants.

This Workshop was dedicated to theoretical and numerical modelling of acoustic treatments made of porous materials and periodic structures. The Workshop also had a session on Multiphysics applications including electromagnetics aimed at broadening the scope of theoretical and numerical results available in different areas of Physics and Mathematics. On this occasion, the leading experts in these fields shared their knowledge with other researchers, PhD students, young scientists and engineers from all across Europe.

The « Workshop Best Paper » was awarded to Ms. Camille Gaulon, PhD candidate at Laboratoire Matière et Systèmes Complexes, Université Paris Diderot, for her presentation on Acoustic properties and dissipation in liquid foams

 The Workshop was organised in 4 sessions of half a day each:

  • New trends in traditional noise treatments – porous materials and microperforated plates
  • Acoustic metamaterials (i.e. subwavelength absorbers), metasurfaces and sonic crystals for audible sound manipulation
  • New trends in vibroacoustics (i.e. elastic metamaterials and metasurfaces)
  • Use of metamaterials in other fields of Physics and metamaterials exposed to multiple physical phenomena

Training Schools 1 and 2

« Sound waves in metamaterials and porous media »

DENORMS Action Training Schools 1 and 2 took place in Prague (CZ), organised and hosted by Czech Technical University in Prague (České vysoké učení technické v Praze, CTU) from 26th to 30th September 2016.

More than 50 trainees participated in these training schools that aimed at providing a common theoretical background to researchers and engineers working on acoustic metamaterials, metasurfaces and sonic crystals as well as conventional acoustic materials. 37 trainees received a COST grant.

Working group 1, 2 and 3 meeting and Management Committee Meeting

The three Working Groups met for the second time on Monday 23rd January 2017. These meetings took place in Rome (IT), organised and hosted by Roma Tre University (Università degli Studi Roma Tre).

After the Working Group meetings was held a Speed dating session aimed at improving collaboration between the Action Working groups.
